I was lucky enough to be asked to participate in the Queal Instant Oats beta test. I received a free bag along with my latest order yesterday, and decided to give it a try this morning. As per the instructions, I mixed 100g of Queal Instant Oats with 100ml of boiling water, stirred it up a bit, and let it cool down for a minute or so. Pretty easy and convenient, with no mixing ball or shaking involved.
I have a mixed opinion. Disclaimer: this was the first time I ate any kind of instant oats or oatmeal-thingy, so I can't really compare with the regular/real thing.
Going by Google pictures of "instant oats" and "instant oatmeal", it seems the texture of Queal Instant Oats closely resembles that of oatmeal porridge, at least when prepared this way (using boiling water). It is very dense and mushy, and sticks to the spoon, very easy to grab.
It tasted about the same as it looked like: bland, dense and mushy. According to the package, the flavour is Red Berries, but to be honest I didn't taste anything but the incredible gravitational mass of the thing. My opinion should be taken with a grain of salt though, as my taste is horrible: I despise fruits/vegetables in general, and only like Chocolate/Chocolate Hazelnut for Queal Steady. I find other flavours are either too bland (vanilla, strawberry, apple pie) or just plain horrible (the rest).
I ate like 75% of the thing and couldn't finish it: it filled me up pretty quickly, though I suspect this is much more related to the density of the texture rather than calories. It should also be noted this could change in time: I have a history of "eating less" when presented with new food, and then ramping up the portions when getting accustomed to it.
I will try variations (less oats/more water, the opposite, cold water, milk perhaps...?) until the bag runs out, and we'll see
